- Residents of Tallinn know him well. Visitors to Tallinn need only to look upwards in the Town Hall Square to meet him. I refer to Old Thomas, the figure of a soldier who has now been standing atop the spire of Tallinn Town Hall for over four hundred years with his legs apart, a sword at his side, a flag in his hand and a hat perched proudly on his head. It is as if he is guarding the city from up there to make sure no enemies are approaching... For the last four centuries, Old Thomas has also been fulfilling his primary duty — to show the people of Tallinn which way the wind is blowing. Is it coming from North, South, East or West? Thomas is as committed and gallantsa statue as he had been as a soldier.
Why? I hear you asking, Did Thomas the soldier really exist? I asked the same question, and I sought an answer in old and dusty historical records untill I found this…
