In the ethnic region of Aukstaitija, the tradition of polyphonic music reaches back to ancient times. In this region polyphonic songs called sutartines, which contain a whole system of the elements of archaic musical and poetical expression, were sung. Along with the vocal polyphony, peculiar (by today's standards) instrumental music existed, which was performed by groups of players blowing on sets of alike instruments - multi-pipe whistles - skuduciai or trumpets - ragai.
