We have tried to display four things that characterise Rīga. First, its the Dome Cathedral. It is neither the highest nor the oldest Rīga church, however, if someone was asked to show the center of Old Rīga he would for sure say that it is in the Dome Square at the Dome Cathedral.
Second, the Monument of Freedom. There is a legend from a student’s essay of the 1930s telling that arriving at Rīga the Monument of Freedom immediately strikes everybody’s eye.
Third, the Opera House. Rīga has always been a city of culture. Opera is a symbol in the very centre of the city which shows its openness to culture activities. Moreover, a respectable part of the Latvian culture budget in the 1990s was spent for its reconstruction.
Fourth, the railway bridge across the river Daugava – to our mind the most outstanding monument of the Latvian industrial heritage. A kind of a horizontal Eiffel Tower but a lot better :)
