- The objective of `The Anti-Soviet Resistance in the Baltic States` is to give a general view of the resistance to the totalitarian communist regime in the Baltic states. The book covers the history of the armed struggle for the restoration of independence. It also discussed the efforts of the resistance fighters to establish ties with the West across the Iron Curtain; the efforts taken by the secret services of some Western countries to use the resistance fighters for their own purposes; and the attitude of the Catholic Church to the Soviet regime and to the underground movements.
This volume should not be taken as an exhaustive study of the history of the resistance of the Baltic nations, but the articles published here are based o primary sources, which makes this book different from other books on the subject published in English. We hope that this research, published for the first time, will fill a gap in the coverage of modern history, and that it will inspire interest in the resistance, which operated without any external support and which determined the latter history of the Baltic states.Dr. Arvydas Anusauskas
