- The Song and Dance Celebration has become a singular kind of pilgrimage, which calls together, and to which big and small from all over Latvia and abroad, make their way. The 2013 Celebration “Līgo - let there be light in Latvia” has a particular role for Latvia on its path towards growth as a nation – it heralds the way to the hundredth anniversary of Latvia’s independence, when in 2018 the next Song and Dance Celebration will take place in the atmosphere of Latvia’s grand celebration.
The major final concert is accompanied by a mighty mass choir comprised of 250 mixed, 75 women’s, 26 men’s, 40 senior’s and also expatriate choirs, some 13,000 singers in all. About 2,000 dancers and 1000 wind orchestra musicians also take part in the Grand Finale concert.
The miracle of the Song Celebration created in Latvia is an example of how a nation can preserve and develop its national singularity in a contemporary world taken over by globalisation, and a model for a peaceful and creative attestation of national identity.
