The 2013 Song Festival was unthinkable without a concert dedicated to the works of Jāzeps Vītols. During this 150th birthday year of the Latvian professional music patriarch his memoirs were leafed through much more often than usual - revealing self-ironic and the occasional deeply dramatic notes. Others have Vienna classics, but we have our Riga classic. On July 2, 2013 the Latvian choir conductors’ choir sang in the Large Hall of the University of Latvia. Choir leaders from all of Latvia had gathered and during several rehearsals pooled their skills to build a unique, singing unity. For many it was a return to earlier years of youth, when, together with the sensation of the presence of a colleague’s friendly shoulder, until then unknown worlds of sound were discovered. Many had possibly already forgotten how it is to obey the hand of another leader, harmonize one’s voice with the vibrations of the vocal strings of one’s neighbour. The years scatter us all, and this makes this kind of gathering especially valuable, bringing the gift of a feeling of spiritual renewal.
