- The people in these photographs, taken during the final years of the 20th century, are wearing clothes similar to the ones worn by their ancestors from 100 to 200 years ago. This was still considered everyday clothing in 1869 when the first national song festival was held. The tradition of song and dance festivals has persisted in spite of modern times and entertainment, and the custom of wearing traditional folkcostumes has continued along with these festivals. Linen and wool are still the materials of choice, the striped skirts are woven on handlooms, the embroidery, open work embroidery and other trimmings are all handmade needle-work.
