- In Latvian, the phrase “papardes zieds” is often used metaphorically to describe something extremely rare, special, or exceptionally valuable—something almost impossible to find. It comes from the old belief that a fern blooms only at midnight, and even then only for a brief moment before the flower vanishes. Because of this, it symbolizes elusive, magical happiness or a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
