According to the latest research, approximately 110-115 000 Latvian soldiers, most born during 1906-1928, were involved in German military forces during World War II. Almost one third of them lost their lives on the battlefield. Since Latvia was occupied and controlled by Nazi Germany and the formation of independent Latvian forces was forbidden, Latvian men had no choice but to serve in military formations established and commanded by the Germans. The main part of Silgailis' book is devoted to the military exploits of the Latvian Brigade, divisions and other armed units fighting on the Eastern front - in Soviet Russia, Latvia and Germany. The authors tries to explain politically the formation of the Latvian Legion, its significance and meaning during World War II. This is still a contraversial topic today. Design by Gunta Plotka.
